ruins that are re-writing history
They call it potbelly hill, after the soft, round contour of this final lookout in southeastern Turkey. To the north are forested mountains. East of the hill lies the biblical plain of Harran, and to the south is the Syrian border, visible 20 miles away, pointing toward the ancient lands of Mesopotamia and the Fertile Crescent, the region that gave rise to human civilization. And under our feet, according to archeologist Klaus Schmidt, are the stones that mark the spot—the exact spot—where humans began that ascent.

'Flash Mob' Of 100 Teens Storm Center City Macy's
Investigators say a massive snowball fight outside City Hall between 100 teens spilled into a popular department store and ended with 14 arrests.
The entire ordeal began when approximately 100 teens engaged in a gigantic snowball fight outside Philadelphia's City Hall Tuesday evening.
Shortly afterwards, the unruly mob then rolled into the Macy's Department Store located in the 1300 block of Market Street.
Once inside, customers told Eyewitness News total chaos ensued.
"A couple kids were shoving and pushing and people started throwing shoes at each other. Someone threw a sign over someone's head," Eyewitness Brianne Bee said.
Customers inside the store said the incident lasted between five to 10 minutes.
A 16-year-old girl was arrested for allegedly kicking a 15-year-old boy in the face as other teens held him down outside the store. The 15-year-old is listed in stable condition at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Similar to the "flash mobs" near South Street in June 2009, investigators believe Tuesday's brawl might have been organized on the internet.
According to investigators, many of the teens involved in the incident attend Simon Gratz High School.
All of the teens are facing charges of disorderly conduct, while some are facing assault charges.
No innocent bystanders were injured. The incident remains under police investigation

J DILLA IS TIMELESS
As in Jay Dee is forever Feb 11, 2010 at 12:32
When it comes to hip-hop producers, there ain’t none greater than J Dilla. This week marks the fourth anniversary of the passing of a man who has influenced the sounds of Erykah Badu, Common, Tribe Called Quest, Janet Jackson, Slum Village and pretty much every beat-maker out there, and with that in mind we thought it was a good time to pay our respects, and highlight the forthcoming release of the Timeless 3 x DVD set.
Timeless was a composer/arranger series originally held in LA last year, comprised of one concert dedicated to each of the three greats – Ethiopian jazz master Mulatu Astatke, Brazilian gem Arthur Verocai, and J Dilla. The event celebrating the Detroit beat-maker, Suite For Ma Dukes (Jay Dee’s mama is Ma Dukes), was performed by a 40-piece orchestra and re-imagined Dilla’s beats into a lush tapestry of strings, horns and percussion.
Until now most of the offerings from the concerts have been instrumentals, but this week they dropped this (apparently Dwele performed this unrehearsed)

The Gentle Woman
Gert and Jop, of FANTASTIC MAN, introduce THE GENTLE WOMAN
"I know, we don't need another new women's fashion magazine right now. However, I say we don't need another bad women's fashion magazine right now. I think THE GENTLEWOMAN has a chance to be something truly different. I am very excited that the first two big interviews and related editorials feature super cool women, Melanie Ward and fashion PR powerhouse, Karla Otto.
So ladies, if you see the copy of FANTASTIC MAN with Ewan McGregor on the cover, don't be afraid to take a peek inside. You might find something you like..."

Dog Rescued From Sea Starts Life With New Master
WARSAW, Poland (AP) -- Baltic, the spunky dog who floated at least 75 miles (120 kilometers) on an ice floe, has a new owner: The seaman who rescued him.
Wojciech Pelczarski of the Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia said the decision was made after the dog rejected six people who had claimed to be his original owner. He said Thursday the would-be owners were probably trying to be part of the media attention surrounding the dog's dramatic rescue.
Pelczarski, whose institute co-owns the research ship ''Baltica'' that rescued the dog and nicknamed him, says Baltic is sociable, affectionate and was getting his first bath since his icy ordeal because his fur was still salty.
The dog's new master is Adam Buczynski, who pulled him to safety from an ice sheet in the Baltic Sea last week.

salinger's town
The curious constantly descended on Cornish and the surrounding area, asking residents for directions to Mr. Salinger’s house. Instead of finding the home, interlopers would end up on a wild goose chase.
How far afield the directions went “depended on how arrogant they were,” said Mike Ackerman, owner of the Cornish General Store. Mr. Salinger, he said, “was like the Batman icon. Everyone knew Batman existed, and everyone knows there’s a Batcave, but no one will tell you where it is.”
